History

A group of parents and friends of children with intellectual disabilities started Sunrise Opportunities in 1957. At that time, children who could not keep up with their classmates were not allowed to remain in school. People who were concerned about giving them the opportunity to learn to their maximum potential formed this organization to deliver specialized services tailored to their specific ability levels. The first program served 10 children and was staffed by a variety of volunteers.

Over the years, private donations and state and federal funding supplemented the money raised through baked bean suppers. Additional programs and services were added to meet a wider array of needs, of the people of Washington County.

Today more than 100 children and adults receive services, which are delivered to people in their homes, or at locations throughout Washington County.

The organization continues its commitment of more than 60 years to provide quality services to help people succeed in their local communities.
